The Greek Primary School The G C School of Careers, in collaboration with the Fotos Fotiadis Foundation, organizes the 2nd Provincial Spelling Bee. Following the model of many other developed countries, where this competition has been an institution for more than a hundred years, we believe that the issue of Greek spelling in primary schools is being highlighted.
The competition aims to help students improve their spelling and vocabulary, learn the etymology of words and delve deeper into their mother tongue, revealing its hidden aspects in a clever way and through polite conversation.
The competition is held with the permission of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth of Cyprus.
The competition is open to students in grades 5 or 6 from public or approved private primary schools in the Nicosia district.
The Spelling Bee will be held in two phases. The semi-final phase will take place on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at G C School of Careers – Secondary School (Stelios Hadjipetri 96, 2057 Strovolos), at 10:00 a.m. The final phase will take place on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre, at 5:30 p.m.
COMPETITION FORMAT
In the semi-final phase, students will be asked to write on paper the 30 words that will be dictated to them. Each correct answer gets 2 or 4 points, depending on its difficulty.
The final phase of the competition will take place in the presence of an audience and the students will be asked to pronounce the letters of each word given to them.
The parent/guardian of the student who wishes to participate in the semi-final phase of the Spelling Bee, should fill in the online form declaration of participation. The registration fee is 5 euros. It is noted that the total proceeds of the competition will be donated for charity to the Little Heroes Foundation and the amount will be handed over at the final.
